I really enjoyed the Bell reading on community. Work came to mind for two reasons:
Where you choose to live
I work for an organisation that started as a registered social landlord, a traditional housing association. We do a lot more now; building our own houses, selling products and services in the local areas. We don’t talk about communities anymore, we talk about creating ‘neighbourhoods of choice’. The idea being that this ‘neighbourhood of choice’ isn’t just somewhere you grow up, or somewhere you live because you can’t afford to live anywhere else, but somewhere you aspire to be. For this reason we build mixed tenure developments – someone on housing benefit living in the same area as someone working – the houses may be different but the neighbourhood is the same.
This strikes a chord with me as I lived in Telford in the early 80s, when it was a really new town. Factories were based there and it was created as place of Industry. Houses were built, shops were built and…that was it. In years to come an ice rink & cinema popped up, but in the early days we had a Spar, a chip shop and a barbers. As kids, this was fine, there were fields and woods to play in. As I grew up, I hated it and escaped as soon as I could.
Lancaster is the polar opposite. We have the community orchard, community centres, community everything. I love that these exist and I like contributing when I can. However, I do get passive-aggressive e-mails from organisers of activities to improve these places that drive me insane and in my less rational moments make me want to move to London where people leave you alone.
Reasons I live in Lancaster:
I have friends here
It’s on a mainline/ the M6 so getting anywhere is easy
It’s pretty & not far from the sea
It isn’t too far from my place of work
It’s a culturally rich place, lots to see and do
Other benefits:
I can get fast broadband
I can accept that traditional ideals of community aren’t a universal ideal anymore, I don’t think they ever has been for me; what I see now is more choice about both where you live and how involved you get in a physical community.
Electronic revolutions
Working in an L&D team, we get involved in a lot of projects. Most of them involve a new IT system & training surrounding it. What strikes me as interesting are the discussions around processes and procedures with new systems. Many managers & users are looking for an upgrade: something that will do the same job as the last thing, but quicker and with less bugs.
What we don’t often do, and what we should do is go back to the original problem and think about how we would love things to work. Then, maybe we can get a system that will do what we need it to.
Often, we decide on a new system (or our IT department do) & we change our processes to fit around it. Sometimes it works better – there are usually both gains and losses in this case; one thing is now easier, but now we can’t do something else..
I think with looking at online groups as replacements for communities, we are assuming that an upgrade has happened. One we may not be happy with – the interface is different, i can’t just nip round to next door for a cup of sugar, i don’t know if that person really is who they say they are…etc.
Communities in the real world clearly still exist, I just think there are just more different kinds of them. I am not sure there are just Tonnies’ wonderfully named Gemeinschaft and Gesdlschaft. Firstly, I think that many people eventually move to find a place to live that suits them. Secondly: I think people can live in the same place and and experience both, or even shades of both.
In online groups, there are similarities with how we make relationships in the real world. Bell points out that we should not assume that all similarities are inherently good – what about exclusion, how traditional, close knit communities deal with difference? And although we do talk about choosing where you live, to some people this is more of a luxury than others. Online, you have much more freedom of choice over where you belong.
In looking at ‘online communities’ we are, as Carpenter puts it: Recasting the knowledge claims of one genre into the generic form of the other: ‘becoming something new and different’. It seems appropriate to, as Bell suggests, have a new word for this in ‘Bünde’; meaning Federation or Union..
